Cost Per Car: How To Actually Price Your Wash Chemistry
Cheap chemical is expensive when you're diluting it at half the rate to get the same result. Here's the math tunnel operators should be running monthly.
Drum price tells you almost nothing. Cost per car is the only number that matters, and it moves with titration, water hardness, and how your operators set the injectors on a busy Saturday.
The formula
Take total chemical spend for the month, divide by car count. Break it out by product — presoak, high pH, low pH, drying agent — so you know which line item is drifting instead of guessing.
- Titrate weekly, not when something looks off.
- Log injector settings so a shift change doesn't silently double your draw.
- Re-run the numbers after any water treatment change — see hard water.
- Standardize mixing with dedicated bottles and sprayers in the prep bay.
Most washes find savings in dilution drift long before they find it in a cheaper drum.
